2048: Merge Numbers, Keep Space

2048 is a sliding-number puzzle played on a 4×4 grid. Move the whole board with the arrow keys or a swipe: when two matching tiles meet, they combine into one tile worth twice as much. Build from 2 and 4 toward 128, 512, 1024 and finally 2048, while making room for the new tile that appears after each successful move. The challenge is not fast tapping but choosing a direction that helps the entire board. A small merge can open an important space; a careless slide can separate a pair you were trying to bring together. Try keeping your largest tile near a corner and smaller values in a useful order along its edge. Reach 2048 to win, then choose Keep going if you want to chase a larger tile or a better score.

How to Play 2048? 📔

  • Start with the whole board

A new game starts with two tiles. Use the arrow keys on a keyboard or swipe across the board on a touchscreen. All tiles slide as far as they can in that direction, so check the whole grid rather than moving only the pair you want to combine.
  • Merge equal values

Two matching tiles combine into their sum: 2 + 2 becomes 4, and 4 + 4 becomes 8. Each tile can merge only once per move. A row of [2, 2, 4, empty] moved left becomes [4, 4, empty, empty] before the new tile appears, not an immediate 8.
  • Leave room for the next tile

A new 2 or 4 appears in an empty cell only when your move changes the board. If nothing can slide or merge in the chosen direction, no tile is added. Before moving, look for a space that will still be useful after the next tile arrives.
  • Reach 2048 and decide what comes next

Combine two 1024 tiles to make 2048. This triggers the win message, but it does not have to end your run: choose Keep going to continue toward 4096 or higher. Your score is the total value of the tiles created by merges, not just your largest tile.
  • Recognize a blocked board

A full board is not automatically game over: matching horizontal or vertical neighbors may still merge. The run ends when no legal move remains. Use New Game or Try again to start over, and consider which earlier move left the board with too little space.

Why Play 2048? 🏆

One board, four directions

The controls are simple, but every move rearranges several tiles at once. You are choosing a new board position, not moving one isolated number. That makes planning the next merge more important than making the quickest available move.

Small random changes

New tiles are usually 2s and occasionally 4s, placed in an empty cell. Their arrival makes each run different. Keep more than one route open instead of relying on a single empty square staying available.

A compact spatial puzzle

Sixteen cells are enough to create difficult choices. Empty space gives you room to bring matching values together, while a crowded edge can trap a useful tile. Read the grid as connected rows and columns rather than separate pairs.

A clear numerical goal

Each merge doubles a value, making progress easy to follow. Moving from 128 to 256 and then 512 is visible on the board. Reaching 2048 is a concrete target, while the score rewards all the merges made along the way.

Play beyond the first win

The Keep going option lets a successful run continue after 2048. Larger tiles require more careful space management, so a winning layout can become a fresh challenge without switching to a different game mode.

Keyboard or touch controls

Play with arrow keys on a computer or swipes on a touchscreen. The game also shows your current and best scores. In browsers that allow local storage, your unfinished board and best score can be kept on the same browser.
